About Us

The Great Blue Heron Company has been in business since 1992 as a high end western furniture and accessory company.  Currently Mathew Tammen owns and runs the business that was started by his Father, Fred Tammen.  Our goal is to set the standard in quality and in design for the western and lodge furniture market.  Normally our furniture tends to be classically styled frame designs upholstered with a combination of the rich, enduring colors of oiled or wax finish leathers, embossed leathers, and "hair-on" hides.

Furniture Construction

The Great Blue Heron proudly manufactures all of our upholstered furniture right here in Texas.  The Great Blue Heron Company truly offers the highest quality furniture in the industry.  Quality in furniture starts with the frame.  Our frames are built exclusively of kiln dried Oak.  Many companies use softer woods like Pine or Cedar for cost savings, and some companies advertise "hard wood" frames which generally refers to Poplar.  None of these woods have the rigidity or performance of our solid Oak frames.  You will have no issues with cracking, splitting, or shrinking frames, problems that many times plague furniture pieces with frames of lesser woods.   Most of our pieces are built using No-Sag Springs; this type of spring allows customization of frame sizes and performs better than the drop-in units made overseas.  There are several types of cushion materials we use depending on preference and piece, please contact us for specifics.  The Great Blue Heron Company sources leathers and hides from all over the world and we go to great lengths to procure only the highest quality leathers.  All of our leathers are full grain, and all of our hair on hides are tanned in Brazil at a tannery that is widely recognized as the best tannery of its type in the world.

Order Process

Very rarely will the particular piece of furniture you want be in stock, The Great Blue Heron is primarily a custom furniture builder and the pieces shown here on the website are just some of our most popular configurations.  In general there is a 6-8 week lead time on furniture.  If you do not see a piece that fits your needs on the website please give us a call because there is a great probability that we can make what you want.  We require 50% down payment on any of our pieces, and at the time the piece is completed, we will contact you and, if necessary, provide pictures of the piece, at this time the balance is to be paid and we will ship the piece.  Please see the shipping process tab of our website to better understand the shipping process. Currently we do not allow any on-line purchasing, we prefer to talk with you in person or at least via email, so if you are ready or have questions on ordering please give us a call or email to proceed.

The Great Blue Heron strives to build furniture that will last for years to come.  Please do not rush into any decisions about your furniture, and if you have any questions that are not addressed here on the website, just give us a call at 866-247-9688.
